Analyzing the “Big 6”

When Roman Abramovich bought Chelsea in 2003, it created what was called the “Big 4” of English football – Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool. When Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan purchased Manchester City, the “Big 4” turned into a “Big 3”, but evolved back into a “Big 4”, with City taking Liverpool’s place. This summer, I think we will see the formation of a new “Big 6” for at least the next few years. There was a risk of a return to the “Big 3”, as Arsenal have not looked like title contenders recently, but their spending and the emergence of Tottenham and Liverpool should create a close competition at the top of the Premier League. United, City and Chelsea are on a bit of a higher level than the other three clubs, but I expect it to be very tight at the top.

  • Arsenal have been slowly declining since 2009 and have gone eight trophy-less years under Arsene Wenger, but the signing of Mesut Ozil has turned around what has been a dismal transfer policy and reignited the club’s trophy hopes. After years of failed signings and big-money departures with no replacements, Arsenal have finally made a splash in the transfer market. Ozil was expensive, but he is “the best #10 in the world” by Mourinho’s standards, and touted highly by many observers. He was the statement signing they needed.

  • Tottenham have continuously tried to break into the Champions League places but have only succeeded in doing so once (although they did come in fourth in 2011-2012). Despite losing Gareth Bale to Real Madrid, Tottenham’s team is arguably better now, as new signings Paulinho, Erik Lamela and Christian Eriksen should have a sizeable impact. Roberto Soldado is already having an impact with two goals in his first three Premier League games.

  • Liverpool’s signings are providing the best results at the time being, as they sit atop the Premier League with three wins from three. Daniel Sturridge has been brilliant since his arrival from Chelsea, and while I don’t expect his goal-scoring form to continue, he is the type of player who can be a danger to score at any time. Mamadou Sakho was another good signing and the acquisition of Victor Moses on loan could create a dangerous wing partnership with young star Raheem Sterling. Liverpool didn’t hit all of their transfer targets but are certainly stronger than last year’s team that finished seventh. The Reds haven’t finished higher than sixth for the past four seasons and will be desperate to break back into the Champions League places.

With the transfer window now closed, and no real other contenders for a top-six place, I can give a reasonable prediction about each team’s year-end place in the league.

Manchester United
Current Status: Worrying

There’s no one who would like to see United have a Liverpool-esque fallout more than me, but I think many people are hitting the panic button on this team too early. The squad is largely the same as last year’s, which won twenty-eight Premier League games to win the league by eleven points. However, there was always going to be a huge impact when Sir Alex Ferguson decided to retire, and despite David Moyes being a justifiable replacement, the club is going to undergo an inevitable dip. This was already illustrated during the transfer window when United seemed to have a new target to chase every week, and did not acquire a single one until they escaped with Marouane Fellaini (whom they overpaid for). Moyes did manage to keep a hold of Wayne Rooney, and did not lose any other key members of the squad, but it is very concerning that they did not get any of their early targets. Thinking United would fall too far would be naïve; it just does not look promising for an aging team with a manager who is new to the big stage. Their Champions League group is a tricky one as well.

Projection: Third

Manchester City
Current Status: Trending Upwards

Things are looking like they are falling into place this season for Manchester City. Manuel Pellegrini did a great job strengthening the team and they finally don’t have a “Group of Death” in the Champions League. Big money signings Fernandinho and Stevan Jovetic will add to the team’s enormous depth, and Jesus Navas will fit nicely into a wing role. Alvaro Negredo has already scored twice but I don’t see him having too big of an impact, and Martin DeMichelis is old. But getting rid of Carlos Tevez and Kolo Toure will also help the team, although they could have signed another defender. They will have to play Bayern in the group stage, and I warn them to be wary of CSKA, but they should find themselves in the knockout stage of the UCL for the first time this season. City have a deep squad and have finished in the top three in the Premier League the past three seasons, but I expect their possible European run to have an impact on their domestic durability. They are also looking very sloppy in their own third of the field, which Pellegrini needs to fix immediately. City will be in the mix for the whole season, but their strong odds of progressing in the Champions League could actually hurt their domestic season.

Projection: Second

Chelsea
Current Status: Elite

Now before I have to hear anything about being biased, I would ask everyone to take a look at what Chelsea did this offseason. They brought back mutually beloved manager Jose Mourinho, who is unquestionably the best man for the post, while adding Andre Schurrle, Marco Van Ginkel, Willian, and Samuel Eto’o. They also received Kevin De Bruyne back from loan. Mourinho was able to get Victor Moses and Romelu Lukaku out on loan instead of holding them on the bench, while offloading older players Yossi Benayoun and Flourent Malouda. The team had needs at manager, striker, holding midfielder, and attacking midfielder this offseason. All of these needs were addressed. It is arguable that the defense is still a bit weak, but Chelsea have a team built to win trophies. They had the third best defensive record in the Premier League last season, and Mourinho is known for his tactical drilling in that end of the field, so there is no reason to expect worse. There isn’t any coming together needed like City or Tottenham or any major regime change like United – it is simply the reinforcement of the existing blueprint with a manager and players who fit the system. This team can compete with anyone, and the stability Mourinho brings to the volatile club is what gives them the edge in the Premier League this season.

Projection: First

Arsenal
Current Status: Optimistic

For the first time in years, Arsenal fans watched the transfer window end with something to be cheery about. Whatever your rating of Ozil might be, it has to be high, and he not only helps the team on the field, but also put a much needed support under the club’s ailing transfer policy. If the Ozil signing helps Arsenal’s fortunes greatly this season, then top-tier players will be attracted to the club again. This is a sizeable task though – Ozil is an elite player but his position, the No. 10 role, was not a need for the Gunners. They still possess just an above-average goalie in Wojciech Szczesny and a front-line starved for depth. Wenger’s plans to sell Nicklas Bendtner came to a halt this summer when Lukas Podolski and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain picked up injuries, leaving Bendtner as the only forward player behind Olivier Giroud. Giroud has been improving, but has not established himself as a top-level striker yet and has no competition for his place. Gervinho left this summer, and although he will not be missed much, the return of Mathieu Flamini as Arsenal’s only other major signing is hardly inspirational. I commend Arsenal for acquiring Ozil, because without him they had little chance of progressing through their difficult group in the Champions League, or finishing in the top four in England. His impact will only be seen over time, and my fear is he could add to Arsenal’s tendency to dissect teams without scoring goals. It’s going to be tight to secure a Champions League place, but Arsenal fans must be optimistic about Wenger’s rare splash.

Projection: Fourth

Tottenham Hotspur
Current Status:  In Transition

The Gareth Bale saga consumed most of Tottenham’s summer, but I can barely have any sympathy – we all knew he was going to leave and it is largely Daniel Levy’s fault for dragging out the process all summer. No team wants to lose a player like Bale but the exorbitant sum they received for him will make this team better as a whole. I mentioned the big signings above – they also brought in defender Vlad Chiriches, midfielder Etienne Capoue, and midfielder Nacer Chadli to add even more depth. The one sale I don’t understand is Steven Caulker, who Spurs sold to Cardiff. Why sell a 21-year old defender to another Premier League side when you lack the depth in that area? Mysterious to me, and they’d better hope Jan Vertonghen doesn’t go down with an injury. As a whole, this team looks like it could be really good, but it always takes time to put a team together with so many new signings. It will be very tight for Champions League places, but Spurs look like they will fall a little short again. If it begins to come together, this team will bea title contender next season.

Projection: Fifth

Liverpool
Current Status: Overachieving

Liverpool have struggled for the past four years and are looking at this campaign as a make-or-break one for Brendan Rodgers. It is off to the best possible start, as three 1-0 victories have given them a nice boost to start the season. The signing of Sakho was huge, as was the loan pickup of Aly Cissokho from Valencia. Getting rid of Andy Carroll and Stewart Downing is also a good sign, as those players struggled mightily during their Liverpool careers. I don’t believe this success is sustainable. I like how Liverpool boosted their defense and brought in Simon Mignolet to be their #1 in goal, but I don’t think the midfield play is going to be strong enough to contend with the five sides mentioned above. They were twelve points behind fourth place last year and breaching the top three looks very unlikely. Luis Suarez’s return from suspension should bring a boost to the side, especially if he can partner up with Sturridge. This team’s problem has been finishing chances, so two goal scorers on the field could see the Reds have a breakthrough season. I’m still at the stage where I have to see it to believe it. Liverpool, like Spurs, could wind up in a Champions League spot, but look just a bit weaker than their rivals at this point.

Projection: Sixth

Notes:

TOP TEN: Bayern Munich moves ahead of Manchester City this week after putting in twenty goals in three games, followed by advancing to the cup finals after defeating Borussia Monchengladbach on penalties. There's no doubt about Bayern's talent - the only concern is their away form. With the Champions League final in their own building, the Germans must feel great about their chances - if they can get there. A potential semi-final matchup with Real Madrid stands in the way.. Meanwhile, City have been far from impressive. Even a comeback victory over Chelsea should not quell the nerviness around the Etihad, as the performance was a far cry from their early season form. Nonetheless, it was the result they needed, and that is the key to winning a title - getting results out of games in which the team does not play well. The EPL title will go down to the wire between City and Manchester United.. Another great title race is going on in Serie A between AC Milan and Juventus. Juve are still undefeated with ten games left but trail Milan by four points. However, they gained some important momentum by knocking the Rossoneri out of the Coppa Italia. The teams have similar run-ins in terms of difficulty, so it will be up to Milan to hold their nerve.. Chelsea is back on the rise despite losing to City. The speed of their attacking buildups is dramatically faster, and key players like Torres and Lampard are starting to return to form. Even John Obi Mikel is playing well. Whether their performances had anything to do with tactics or not, the side looks rejuvenated under Roberto Di Matteo. Perhaps the old guard still has a few tricks left. A quarterfinal matchup with Benfica is favorable, but Barcelona could be waiting.

11-25:  Tottenham have come crashing down to Earth after sitting in third for a good part of the season. After being passed by Arsenal this weekend, Spurs are now focusing on securing a UCL spot with just a five-point lead over Chelsea and a trip to the Bridge awaiting them on Saturday. A loss there would really be trouble for Tottenham.. Lyon are back after winning three straight following their UCL exit at the hands of APOEL. Sitting just four points behind third-placed Lille, Lyon have every chance to qualify for next year's Champions League. There is plenty of quality in the squad, which made their performances against the Cypriot champions all the more puzzling.. After seeing City and United crash out of the Europa League, Schalke are now favorites to take the title. The side have recovered very well from their early season slumber, and with Huntelaar having perhaps his best season to date, a trophy and a Champions League place could be destined for Gelsenkirchen.. Before the Rome derby, Lazio players and management described what an important game it would be in the race for third place, and the last UCL berth. Lazio defeated Roma 2-1, but subsequently dropped two straight games home to Bologna and away to Catania. Lazio have had a solid season, but Napoli and Udinese are only a point behind now. Should be a very tight close to the season in that part of Serie A as well.

Top 25 - March 9

Not much has changed but many of the top sides are really struggling. French football is taking a beating this year. Here is this week's Top 25:

Format: Rank (Previous) Team (Country)

1 (1) FC Barcelona (ESP)
2 (2) Real Madrid CF (ESP)
3 (3) Manchester City FC (ENG)
4 (4) FC Bayern Munich (GER)
5 (5) Manchester United FC (ENG)
6 (6) Tottenham Hotspur FC (ENG)
7 (7) Borussia Dortmund (GER)
8 (9) AC Milan (ITA)
9 (8) Juventus FC (ITA)
10 (10) Paris St. Germain FC (FRA)
11 (11) Chelsea FC (ENG)
12 (14) Arsenal FC (ENG)
13 (13) SL Benfica (POR)
14 (15) Montpellier HSC (FRA)
15 (12) FC Zenit St. Petersburg (RUS)
16 (24) SSC Napoli (ITA)
17 (17) LOSC Lille (FRA)
18 (16) Schalke 04 (GER)
19 (23) Borussia Monchengladbach (GER)
20 (21) CSKA Moscow (RUS)
21 (22) Newcastle United FC (ENG)
22 (NR) SS Lazio (ITA)
23 (19) FC Inter Milan (ITA)
24 (25) FC Basel (SWI)
25 (NR) APOEL FC (CYP)

Dropped from Rankings: Olympique de Marseille (18), Olympique Lyon (20)

Notes:

TOP TEN: AC Milan moves in front of Juventus after they took top spot from the Old Lady in Serie A. Despite squeaking through their tie against Arsenal, this team has the talent to win the league and maybe even the Champions League if its stars decide to show up, which did not happen at the Emirates.  Juventus is still undefeated in the league (13 wins, 13 draws) but has lacked the cutting edge to grind out wins against some of the smaller clubs in the league. With twelve games left, Juve could avoid defeat for the remainder of the season as its toughest games are at their home stadium. However, they need to turn draws into wins or Milan will take its second straight Scudetto.. Strangely, the only team in the top ten to win a match in Europe over the past three weeks was Barcelona. As Lionel Messi's five-goal game showed, the Catalans have some distance between them and the rest of Europe. Real Madrid and Manchester City have come close to reaching their level, but haven't obtained the same kind of results in Europe. Barcelona is set to roll through the Champions League this year, and it would really be a huge upset if they lost, to anyone.. This Manchester United team is unlike any I have ever seen. At times, they show their vintage ability to grab results despite being outplayed (such as last week's win at Tottenham), but they have also lost at home this season to Blackburn, Ajax, and Athletic Bilbao. Sitting two points behind City is not a bad position, but there cannot possibly be the same type of belief in the United camp as in years past.

11-25: When I began these rankings, I considered the French clubs to be a cluster of teams having around the same type of quality. That has certainly cleared up, as Lyon and Marseille have tanked, while PSG and Montpellier have continued to shine. Olivier Giroud has continued his scoring form, even scoring for France against Germany in a friendly. Lille is still hanging in there, but is not near the level of last year, and the inevitable departure of Edin Hazard this summer will change the club.. As of today, two of the Champions League knockout round's largest minnows in history are still in the competition. APOEL ko'd Lyon on March 7 and Basel can do the same to Bayern on the 13th. APOEL's magical run has earned them a place among the top teams in Europe, and with Basel's stellar form continuing, who's to say they can't join them in the quarterfinals. Both teams have shown the ability to attack the big boys with quality football, not simply sit back and repel waves of attacks.. This could be Inter's last week in the rankings. The team looks dreadful, Rainieri is likely on the way out, and the team is down to 7th in the table. The talent hasn't gone anywhere - there is just no confidence or motivation. Bowing out to Marseille in the Champions League on March 13 could finally be the end for the manager.. Arsenal have taken a big step to secure fourth place over Chelsea by holding a three point advantage with eleven games to go. Arsenal's performances have improved greatly, and the results are beginning to come around. Chelsea still have a long ways to go in finding stability, having just fired their manager, while winning just four of their last twelve matches.

Top 25 - February 23

I apologize for the Top 25 being two days late, but I think I should publish it on Thursdays anyway to accommodate for the European ties taking place. Here is this week's Top 25:

Format: Rank (Previous) Team (Country)

1 (1) FC Barcelona (ESP)
2 (2) Real Madrid CF (ESP)
3 (3) Manchester City FC (ENG)
4 (4) FC Bayern Munich (GER)
5 (5) Manchester United FC (ENG)
6 (7) Tottenham Hotspur FC (ENG)
7 (8) Borussia Dortmund (GER)
8 (9) Juventus FC (ITA)
9 (11) AC Milan (ITA)
10 (10) Paris St. Germain FC (FRA)
11 (6) Chelsea FC (ENG)
12 (13) FC Zenit St. Petersburg (RUS)
13 (14) SL Benfica (POR)
14 (12) Arsenal FC (ENG)
15 (19) Montpellier HSC (FRA)
16 (16) Schalke 04 (GER)
17 (17) LOSC Lille (FRA)
18 (18) Olympique de Marseille (FRA)
19 (15) FC Inter Milan (ITA)
20 (20) Olympique Lyon (FRA)
21 (21) CSKA Moscow (RUS)
22 (22) Newcastle United FC (ENG)
23 (23) Borussia Monchengladbach (GER)
24 (25) SSC Napoli (ITA)
25 (NR) FC Basel (SWI)

Dropped: Udinese Calcio (24)

Notes:

TOP TEN: AC Milan return to the top ten after three consecutive wins, including a hammering of Arsenal and the infliction of Udinese's first home defeat. Milan certainly have the quality to play with anyone in Europe. It is all about keeping those players in form and focused.. I haven't moved Bayern down yet but they are certainly in worrying form. Draws against the weaker Bundesliga sides away from home will not be good enough in a year where there are four legitimate contenders. They are also the second top 5 team to lose away to FC Basel.. It was surprising to see Real Madrid concede a late goal against CSKA. Mourinho's teams are known for their ability to keep leads and get results. It didn't happen in Moscow, and while Real still have an advantage heading back to the Bernebeu, they failed to deliver the knockout blow.. I'm pretty sure Barcelona don't care about La Liga this season. Another loss, away to Osasuna, shows the lackadaisical nature of Barca's domestic season. Now ten points back of Real, the Catalans may not want to bother attempting to cut the large gap in order to focus on winning the Champions League.

11-25: Arsenal and Chelsea are now deadlocked in a tight race in the Premier League. Unfortunately for the London clubs, that race is for fourth place, not the title. Arsenal is all but out of the Champions League and have been eliminated from both domestic cups, while Chelsea faces a 3-1 deficit against Napoli and a replay against Birmingham to stay in the FA Cup. With the current top three looking very strong in the Premier League, the race looks down to these two big clubs for fourth (with maybe a mention for Newcastle). The club that does not obtain that fourth spot could be in a world of trouble..  FC Basel has earned its place in the Top 25 after an impressive 1-0 win over Bayern Munich. After enduring a torrid ten minute spell to start the contest, Basel grew into the game, creating multiple great chances, hitting two posts, before finally scoring the winner in the 86th minute. They do not pack the back like APOEL; Basel plays a very attractive style that has made them a loveable underdog. The task in Munich will be much more difficult, however.. Montpellier were minutes away from going top of Ligue 1 but PSG equalized to snatch a 2-2 draw. With thirty-one points out of thirty-six at home, along with a strong away record and top goal difference in the league, Montpellier must be considered a top-two team in France.. I'm impressed with the showings from both CSKA and Zenit in the Champions League. Both teams are on winter break and faced top-15 sides, with CSKA gaining a draw and Zenit a 3-2 win. I've rated these teams highly and they seem to be backing me up. Not quite sure why Zenit are attempting to acquire Andrei Arshavin though. Maybe a return would spark the little Russian's creativity back into him.

The transfer window is now closed, and the top sides are all set for the run-in. Here is the updated Top 25:

Format: Rank (Previous) Team (Country)

25 (20) SSC Napoli (ITA)

Dropped: Valencia CF (19), Bayer Leverkusen (22), FC Porto (24)

Notes

TOP TEN: The draw between Chelsea and Manchester United on Sunday showcased each team's respective strengths and weaknesses. Chelsea tend to either have too many men committed forward or too many held back, leading to either erratic, high-scoring games or one or two-goal games. United have a great attacking force and spirit to climb out of a deficit, but have shown repeated weakness on the backline. Neither team really has an identity, and it's February.. Dortmund jumped to the top of the Bundeliga after a fourth straight win in the league. Mario Gotze's absence has not been felt yet, as Jurgen Klopp has built a solid core in the midfield.. Tottenham failed to break down a Liverpool defense at Anfield, but it was a point gained rather than two dropped. Without VDV and Lennon, Tottenham do not have the same creativity, but coming away with a point away is key in the Premier League.. I'm liking PSG more and more. They play an attractive brand of football and have the quality of players to win the league. Other than Montpellier, the closest challengers are at least ten points behind.. Juventus is the only Italian club in the top ten. The Turin club are still undefeated in the league and despite some ugly results (a home draw vs. Siena this weekend), they are top of the league by a point with a game in hand over struggling AC Milan.

11-25: Just when you thought Inter Milan had put it back together, they lose away to relegation-threatened Lecce, concede four times in a draw with Palermo, which was followed by a 4-0 hammering courtesy of AS Roma. There's no consistency with the team, and it is going to be a real struggle to secure Champions League football next season.. Benfica have cruised through the Portuguese Liga this season. Fourteen wins from seventeen, along with three draws, see the club five points clear of Porto. By winning their Champions League group and drawing twice with Manchester United, Benfica have proven their top-level credentials despite being in a relatively weak league.. After PSG, all of the French clubs are grouped from 17-20. I have no idea where to put them. Montpellier are in the highest league position, but lack the player experience and club history of Lille, Marseille, and Lyon. It should be a tight battle for the UCL positions in France.. Newcastle enter the rankings this week after another impressive win over Aston Villa. It seems as if we've all been waiting for Newcastle's form to capitulate, but it hasn't happened. The team has kept to form through Demba Ba's absence and now Yohann Cabaye's absence. With Ba now back, Cabaye returning from suspension, and the addition of Papa Cisse, Newcastle's supporters are feeling ambitious about a European place.. Marco Reus continues to pull the strings for Borussia Monchengladbach. The unheralded side are currently fourth in the league, and just three points from the summit. Reus has helped lift this side and could be in line for a national team call before Euro 2012 this summer.. Udinese have taken 31 of a possible 33 points at the Stadio Friuli. Antonio Di Natale is back to form and is even being considered for an Italy recall. Their away form is troubling but in a weak Serie A, it may not matter.

Top 25

From now on, every two weeks I will put out a Top 25 of the teams in Europe, with a few comments on the movements in the rankings and particular squads' recent activity. These are subjective rankings, because I don't have a computed way of ranking the clubs. I've done my best to evaluate the squads based on their relative strength domestically and in Europe. Here is the Top 25 for January 24:

1) FC Barcelona (ESP)
2) Real Madrid CF (ESP)
3) Manchester City FC (ENG)
4) FC Bayern Munich (GER)
5) Manchester United FC (ENG)
6) AC Milan (ITA)
7) Chelsea FC (ENG)
8) Tottenham Hotspur FC (ENG)
9) Juventus FC (ITA)
10) Borussia Dortmund (GER)
11) Paris St. Germain FC (FRA)
12) FC Inter Milan (ITA)
13) Arsenal FC (ENG)
14) Zenit St. Petersburg (RUS)
15) Olympique de Marseille (FRA)
16) SL Benfica (POR)
17) LOSC Lille (FRA)
18) Schalke 04 (GER)
19) Valencia CF (ESP)
20) SSC Napoli (ITA)
21) Olympique Lyon (FRA)
22) Bayer Leverkusen (GER)
23) CSKA Moscow (RUS)
24) FC Porto (POR)
25) Montpellier HSC (FRA)

Notes

TOP TEN: Despite being second in La Liga, Barcelona is clearly the best team in Europe. They have been dominant against top competitors Real Madrid and remain favorites to take home the Champions League for the second straight year.. Manchester City is the best team in England, and should remain in the top 3 for the rest of the season. City have the depth and talent to win the Premier League despite failing to reach the knockout stages of the UCL.. Chelsea and Tottenham are neck and neck, but Spurs may have peaked too early. Chelsea are strengthening their squad in January, and Spurs must do the same to keep their league position ahead of the Blues. Spurs are one major injury away from a slide down the table, and with extremely talented, but injury-prone players in Aaron Lennon, Gareth Bale and Luka Modric, Spurs would do well to add another player or two.. Bayern Munich is a dangerous team. They have the talent and experience to beat anyone in Europe.. Borussia Dortmund is a top team despite flopping in the Champions League. However, losing Mario Gotze for up to two months could be a fatal blow to their attempt to repeat as German champions.

11-25: PSG has performed a remarkable turnaround. Between the summer's cash injection and hirings of Leonardo and Carlo Ancelotti, the Parisians could be a real force in Europe as soon as next year.. Porto are not the same team without Andre Villas-Boas, but are also sorely missing Falcao. They are second in the league to Benfica but struggled mightily in the Champions League. Seven goals in six games is not vintage Porto, especially considering they were handed perhaps the easiest draw.. Inter is back on track. The Nerazzurri are up to fourth in Serie A after being in the relegation zone early in the season. They will be a tough out in Europe.. For the third year in a row, Montpellier are off to a good start in Ligue 1. Last year, one win in their final ten games left the side at just 14th in the league. This year looks like a different story, as the club sit second behind 14 league goals by Olivier Giroud. They could be on course for a first ever Champions League appearance. However, there is still a lot of season left and Lille and Lyon are lurking.. Arsenal have probably the weakest squad they've ever had in Arsene Wenger's tenure, and are still a top-15 European side. That is impressive on its own.

Beginning the New Year

First post of the year - thought I'd give a summary of the first half of this year's EPL and an outlook on what's to come for the rest of the season.

TEAM TO BEAT: Manchester City.

City have proven throughout the first half of the season that they are true contenders, netting 56 goals in their first 20 fixtures, and currently holding a three-point lead over Manchester United. City have been the most consistent side so far and have rarely tripped up against inferior opposition. However, the results have not been as solid lately, and the club have exited the Champions League and the FA Cup. I think this part of the season will bring out City's true colors. Yaya Toure (as well as Kolo) leave for the African Cup of Nations, and other than David Silva, Yaya is the team's most important player. Over the next two months, City will travel to Liverpool, Everton, Aston Villa and Porto in a variety of competitions. A home game against Spurs also awaits towards the end of January. This is a key part of the season, and with rivals United only three points behind, Spurs close on their tail, and both Chelsea and Arsenal not completely out of it, City must avoid a drop in form if they are to win the title.

What do the top sides need?

The January transfer window can change the dynamic of a season by adding a spark in a side that is in need of some creativity. None of the top sides this year are so high and mighty that they are without the need to make change. Manchester City has a great squad, and they really don't need to make any acquisitions - but they must offload Carlos Tevez. The longer his presence lingers in Eastlands the worse, and while he is no longer close to being in the side, he should be moved to allow the team to move forward. City have plenty of options in both attack and defense, and the only possible addition would be a holding midfielder to replace Yaya while he is gone. United have many more issues, and Sir Alex Ferguson should be looking to add a central defender and holding/central midfielder. Injuries have hit the squad hard this year, and injuries to Vidic and Fletcher are particularly damaging. This defense has proven time and time again that it is quite frail, and adding a central defender would boost the unit as a whole. A holding/central midfielder seems to have been found, as Paul Scholes has returned for the rest of the season. Tottenham need to make sure they keep their key players at the club, which it looks like they will be able to do. It seems to be a theme but I would like to see Harry Redknapp try and add a central defender. Spurs are after Gary Cahill and he would be a good fit, as Spurs are not great in the air or deep in their defensive ranks. However, it looks as if Cahill could be heading to Chelsea, who need him to replace Alex, who appears to be heading out the door. Chelsea's midfield looks pretty solid, but could use another attacker to replace Drogba when he heads off to Africa. Hulk would be a great addition but Porto is unlikely to let him go, and his release clause is astronomical. Chelsea really just has to hope Fernando Torres gets his game back, but they will probably attempt to add a creative player over the window. Arsenal just bought Mertesacker to help in defense but they really could use another player, especially a right-back, to help with the injuries to Sagna and Jenkinson. The Gunners should be getting Jack Wilshere back soon, which will be a huge boost. Lastly, Liverpool have all sorts of issues now with the Luis Suarez suspension. Andy Carroll isn't getting it done up top, so they could try to buy a striker. Liverpool have the worst chance-conversion rate in the league and if they are to secure a spot in the top four they must be more clinical in front of goal.

Team to Rise Up the Table: QPR.

Rangers have just sacked Neil Warnock and sit 17th in the table, just a point above Bolton. I don't know who they will bring in, but the change will probably give the side a boost, and they will be willing to spend over the window. This team is better than their position in the table suggests, but then again, there really aren't any bad sides in the league this year. QPR will probably bring in some new faces to strengthen the squad and replace Alejandro Faurlin, who is done for the season with an ACL tear. The club seem to have big ambitions since Tony Fernandes' takeover, and I would expect them to easily survive relegation and end up somewhere mid-table.

Team to Fall Down the Table: Newcastle United.

The Magpies currently sit 7th in the league after an impressive unbeaten run at the start of the season, but will lose top striker Demba Ba to international duty and may lose him altogether to another side. Newcastle has consistently sold their best players in January and this year could be the same story. They have been relatively consistent this season, especially defensively, which has come as quite a shock considering their personnel and injuries. But it all just seems too good right now for Newcastle, and I would expect the team to fall down a few places even if they hold onto Ba and their other key players. If they lose some other pieces, Newcastle could wind up with a bottom-half finish.

Last note: I would make some predictions here about the top half of the table and relegation, but have decided to do so the day after the transfer window ends. So much can change in January and a team could look completely different on February 1st than it does today. I originally said the top four would be Manchester City, Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool - I think the first three sides are going to be in the top 4 but Liverpool don't stand much of a chance right now. They are just three points back but have the Suarez suspension to deal with and lack the attacking prowess right now to best Arsenal or Chelsea. As for the other side, it is really hard to tell because the teams at the bottom are all as equally bad, and also occasionally good. It should be quite the scrap down there, and the moves each manager makes over this window will likely determine who stays up and goes down.
